Church Van Safety: Cutting Your Largest Auto Liability Exposure — Ministry Insured

A church van holds your youth group, your senior ministry and your reputation. It is also, dollar for dollar, one of the severest loss exposures on a ministry's insurance program. Auto claims involving multiple occupants routinely exceed property claims by an order of magnitude.

Why fifteen-passenger vans deserve special care

Federal safety research has long flagged the rollover risk of fully loaded fifteen-passenger vans. A high center of gravity, rear-heavy loading and inexperienced drivers combine badly at highway speed. Tire condition matters more than most drivers realize — underinflated or aged tires are a repeated factor in rollover investigations, even when tread looks fine. Practical steps: limit occupancy well below the rated capacity, keep luggage inside the vehicle rather than on a roof rack, check tire pressure before every trip, and replace tires based on age as well as tread depth.

Screen every driver, every year

Set a written driver standard and apply it to paid staff and volunteers alike. Minimum age 25 for passenger vans. A valid license held for at least five years. An annual motor vehicle record check with clear disqualifiers — no DUI, no reckless driving, no more than two moving violations in three years. Document who is approved, and re-run records yearly.

Train before the keys change hands

Anyone driving a van should complete a hands-on orientation covering braking distance, wide turns, backing with a spotter, and the vehicle's blind spots. Prohibit phone use outright, including hands-free. Require seat belts for every occupant, every trip, with the driver responsible for confirming it before moving.

Trip discipline

Assign a second adult on youth trips. Limit driving to no more than two hours without a break and avoid trips after 10 p.m. where possible. File a simple trip plan with the church office: driver, occupants, route, departure and expected return.

Coverage to confirm

Hired and non-owned auto liability, so the church is protected when staff or volunteers use personal vehicles on ministry business. Adequate liability limits — a single van accident can exhaust a $1 million primary limit, which is why an umbrella belongs on nearly every church program. Uninsured and underinsured motorists coverage. Medical payments. And physical damage on owned vehicles.
